CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

There are 3 programs of study at COSB; recreational dance, the year round classical ballet program, and Open Adult Classes.

The year round Classical Ballet program is composed of 3 Levels – Beginning Ballet (1-3), Intermediate Ballet (1-4), and Advanced Ballet. Enrollment for the year begins in June and closes September 30th. Mid-year enrollment for levels Intermediate Ballet 1 and up are considered on a case by case basis and are subject to available space in the appropriate level. Students in the year round program perform in the annual holiday production The Nutcracker, as well as Spring Classical Ballet, and End of Year Showcase.

 The recreational program is perfect for students who want to do ballet but aren’t quite ready for the multi-day commitment that comes with advanced level placement in the year round program. Enrollment is open to all students ages 7-12 year round. Students in the recreational division perform in the school End of Year Showcase.

Open Adult Classes are offered at COSB. These classes are drop-in based and do not require enrollment. Ballet Classes for Adults are available Monday and Friday evenings. Contemporary Classes for Adult Beginners and Intermediate/Advanced Adults on Tuesday and Wednesay mornings. Drop-in rate for classes at COSB is $18/class.

Pre-Ballet
The minimum age for studying ballet at Central Oregon School of Ballet is 5 years old. Pre-Ballet is designed as a class for students ages 5 – 6 with little to no previous ballet experience. There are 2 separate Pre-Ballet classes. To maintain quality of instruction each class is capped at 12 students. Enrollment for the year begins in June and closes September 30th.

Beginning Ballet 1 – 3
There are 3 levels of Beginning Ballet.  Pre-Ballet or at least 1 year previous ballet experience is required for placement in Beginning Ballet 1 – 3.  Each level meets once a week for 1 hour. Age ranges from 6 – 11. Enrollment for the year begins in June and closes September 30th.

Beginning Ballet 7+
This class is for students 7 and older who are new to ballet or who have had significant time away from ballet studies. The goal of the class is to get students caught up to their general peer group over the course of the year and placed in the appropriate level at the end of the season. Enrollment for the year begins in June and closes September 30th.

Intermediate Ballet 1 – 4
At the Intermediate level students begin a more intense study of Ballet. Students move between the levels based on mastery of technique in each level as opposed to years in ballet or peer group. Intermediate 1 begins Pre-Pointe work. Students who show the correct physical development and age begin the study of Pointe Work in Intermediate 2.  Students in Intermediate 3 and 4 have increased time in class, meeting multiple times a week and begin rehearsal for main stage productions outside of class in addition to regular class work. Intermediate levels have increasingly larger amounts of responsibility and dancing as they move through the levels. Placement in Intermediate level classes is by audition only. Enrollment for the year begins in June and closes September 30th. Mid-year enrollment is considered on a case by case basis and is subject to available space in the appropriate level.

Advanced Ballet
Students in the Advanced Level at COSB are required to meet at least 5 days a week. It is reserved for students who have excelled in previous levels of the school. There is an increased emphasis in artistry, theatricality and musicality in addition to advanced technical work en pointe and the study of classical ballet variations. It is a closed class, Director approval is required for drop-ins. Placement in the advanced class is by audition only.

Open Adult Ballet
There are 2 Open Adult Ballet Classes at COSB. Monday evening 6:15 -7:15. and Friday evening 6:15 – 7:15. Classes are taught at an Intermediate level and previous ballet experience is high encouraged.  It is a drop-in basis class with no enrollment required. Drop-in fee is $18/class or a 10 Class Card can be purchased for $150. Ballet Shoes are required, otherwise wear whatever you feel you can move comfortably in.

Adult Beginning Contemporary
Learn the basic skills of Contemporary Dance Technique! Class includes floor work, traveling steps, and simple choreography. No previous dance experience is required. Open Adult Beginning Contemporary is a drop-in basis class with no enrollment required. Drop-in fee is $18/class or a 10 Class Card can be purchased for $150. The class meets Wednesday morning from 10-11:15am. Wear attire you can move comfortably in. Bare feet or socks are great for contemporary dance. Open Adult Contemporary
Class meets Tuesday 10-11:15am. The Intermediate/Advanced technique class is influenced by the foundations of modern dance and contemporary practices(release technique, GAGA, Countertechnique etc.).  This class is designed to help students move dynamically with proper alignment, easily transition in and out of the floor, and play with musicality. Classical training, Pilates, and yoga are important tools that are used to help students gain an understanding of healthy alignment. Class structure includes floorwork, center work, and moving across the floor and culminates in combinations that combine all of the class ingredients.  Students will build strength, flexibility, and endurance and have fun flying through space.  Classes will build from week to week, but drop ins are welcome.  Previous training is highly encouraged.
